What is an LMS?

Everything you always wanted to know about Learning Management Systems (but never dared to ask)

You've mastered the fax machine. The mobile phone has no secrets for you. The tablet has become your best friend. And you tamed the WEB. Yet there are concepts you don't understand, like this LMS-things people keep putting forward in business discussions and dinners. You know it's important, but what is it? We will quickly enlighten you.

LMS stands for Learning Management System.

  • Learning=Learn, because you use it to deliver courses or training programs.
  • Management=Management, because it helps you organize these courses (create, modify, assign to students, etc).
  • System=System, last but not least, it's just a word that translates as "software". An LMS is a computer program.

Just as Word helps you write documents and Gmail allows you to manage your emails, an LMS is software that allows you to create, manage and deliver e-Learning courses.

An LMS is the "engine" that powers eLearning, and in the most common form, it consists of two distinct parts :

  • A so-called server component that runs the basic functionality (course creation, management and delivery, user authentication, data processing and notifications, etc...)
  • A user interface inside your web browser (also used by Gmail or Facebook), which is used by learners, instructors and administrators.

In short, an LMS allows you to create e-learning content (courses), organize these courses, deliver the content (either internally to your company or to a wider Internet audience), enroll students in courses, and finally, monitor and evaluate their performance (attendance, grades, etc.). Criterion 1: Public Information


SPOT LMS ensures access to information for learners. Information documents (internal regulations, legislation, objectives, instructions, recommendations, learner aids, etc.) can be made available to learners at any stage of the training course via different educational content (PDF, HTML, website content, etc.).
Reports presenting training follow-up result indicators can be automatically distributed to the platform users or even shared with an audience outside the platform.

Criterion 2 : Objectives and adaptation of services


The objectives can be described in an introductory section of the training path. The positioning of a prerequisite makes it possible to require prior consultation of the objectives to begin the training course. The implementation of positioning tests at the beginning of the training course allows the trainer to adapt the training to the learner.
In SPOT LMS, the objectives can be evaluated using various tools such as quizzes, tests, and assignments in the form of files, videos, or screenshots. The tutor can also evaluate the acquisition of skills by interviewing the learner via a video conference or during a virtual class. The analysis of the results by the trainer allows for individualized support in real time.

Criterion 3 : Reception, follow-up and evaluation of the public


Information on the content, course and regulations of the training can be made available to learners in the introductory part of the training course. SPOT LMS makes it possible to assign a pedagogical referent to each learner to allow for individual and personalized monitoring of the training course. An automatic notification system (relayed or not by email) informs and reminds the learner throughout the course. A badge system encourages the learner and allows him to follow his progress. To ensure optimal monitoring of the learner's progress, SPOT LMS provides a space dedicated to his or her activity. An individual follow-up sheet provides information on the courses taken and their progress, late courses, work time, results of quizzes and tests as well as certificates awarded. The results of quizzes, tests, and homework assignments can be viewed on the platform. SPOT LMS offers the possibility of creating certificates of achievement and awarding them (automatically or manually) according to the required criteria of success.

Criterion 4 : Adequacy of the means


SPOT LMS is a cloud-based e-learning platform that can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. The platform is accessible 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
